The detroittitans.com web server is scheduled for maintenance on Monday December 18th from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. During this maintenance window http://www.detroittitans.com may be inaccessible to site visitors for periods of 10 to 15 minutes.
Financial Aid Domain will be inacessible 8:00 - 8:30 a.m.
Due to scheduled hardware change, Financial Aid will be taken off-line Friday, Dec. 15 at 8:00 a.m. Expected time to go back on-line is 8:30 a.m. Users won't be able to login and use domain resources during that time.

Yahoo e-mail sporadically available
Since re-establishing the connection to Yahoo we have learned that they are throttling the messages they receive from UDM (as well as many other sites). If you send a message that does not go through, please try to again later. We're still working to see if we can have them open up the throttle.

Exchange E-mail Service
Service has been down since the weekend and ITS-Networking is working to restore access to it. We are also exploring a high-availability implementation to avoid future issues.
Yahoo e-mail service restored
E-mail exchange between .udmercy.edu and yahoo.com has been restored. We apologize for the long delay in service but were working as quickly as we could with Yahoo to resolve the matter. A more permanent fix will be going in over the next several days to solidify the relationship.

Student E-Mail Server Upgrade Complete
First off, we apologize for the lengthy delay in getting the e-mail system back up for students. The process took a lot longer than our original projections but was absolutely necessary to complete to avoid expected major hardware failure at an unpredictable period of time. A failure after this weekend would clearly impact students dealing with the end-of-term issues.
A message has been sent to all faculty so they know that there was an issue with this method of communication.
The upgrade has placed the student e-mail system on a new server with a significant amount of disk space.
ITS has upgraded all accounts to a 25Meg quota. This was long overdue.
Over 14000 accounts were transitioned and converted onto the new server. Approximately 36 had technical issues that ITS is in the process of resolving. If you encounter problems accessing your account, you may be one of the 36. We are continuing to work through the night to address these remaining accounts.
You should know that every message will appear as if it has yet to be read. This is true even for messages that had already been read.
You may also discover that you may need to make adjustments to your settings for the display of the messages. By default, the messages may not display in the same order you had previously view them in.

The upgrade is continuing but processing of the 14000 accounts is taking a little longer than expected. Please hang in there. As soon as the upgrade is done, e-mail will be immediately brought back online.

Update on the Student Email Upgrade as of 11/11 7:28 pm...
Due to some access and quota issues users have encountered over the past several weeks, ITS had sustained usage of the student email system until a convenient time came when we could upgrade the solution. Unfortunately, we were unable to reach a convienent time and had to make this weekend. The upgrade is a fairly significant one that involves an internal conversion of all messages from one format to another. For users, you may notice all of your messages will appear as "unread", even those that had been previously accessed. This is a known result of the upgrade process.
At the completion of this process, we anticipate a much more stable email solution with a significant quota increase and expansion capability to accomodate several years of usage.
We are moving the e-mail solution from a Pentium III dual processor with 80G of disk space solution to a Pentium 4 dual processor with 300G of disk space solution.
If you have the need to reach your professor, please know that the @udmercy.edu e-mail domain is up and running. Faculty may be e-mailed from non-udm accounts at this time.

UDMERCY.EDU E-Mail to Yahoo.COM Slow
Yahoo has slowed down its communication to UDM due to a lot of failed messages from the .udmercy.edu site going to their site. There is little we can do except encourage users to ensure the addresses they send to on the yahoo domain are accurate. Over time, our "relationship" should improve with good addresses and lead to better performance.

Increase in SPAM
It has been reported people are receiving more SPAM than usual. We are seeing five times more e-mail (approx 150000 messages per day come in) vs. a year ago. While the SPAM solution is catching much of the SPAM, the increase in volume is considerable and therefore it may seem like more coming through than normal.

Keyserver/Wins Server
The server hosting the Keyserver and Wins server is experiencing some issues. A reboot of the hardware is needed to resolve them. This will effect the users of the Keyserver. Also a few user may experience some connectivity issues with other Window servers. This is only temporary and should be resolved by morning.

Duplicate IP for Dorm Students
About two weeks ago this issue surfaced. We've been working to resolve it. For anyone encountering the problem, we have had some success with using the IPCONFIG /RELEASE and then the IPCONFIG /RENEW command from the command prompt.

TItanNet Group and Home Directory Issue
This morning we encountered an issue reaching group and home directories. Thanks to those who reported the matter. Access has been restored.

Listserver Issue
The listserver is presently not delivering messages due to a technical issue (disk space related). Staff have it back up but and the queues are now processing but there are a number of messages that have yet to process through.
Outer Drive Internet Down
A scheduled upgrade of the WIFI bridge is taking place today and tomorrow. Access at the new and improved rate should be available after 3:00 pm on 3/10/06.

Campus Wide Internet Access Restored
Approximately 4:30 pm all power in Shiple brought failed and brought down the wireless bridge to our ISP. This was related to work on the fire alarm systems. Power and internet access was restored about 7:00 pm.

Current Internet Outages 2/22/06
Merit has resolved the network outages that were affecting all Merit users, including UDM. It appears that it was a DDoS attack against Merit causing some of their network equipment to shut down. No further details were released.

Merit is currently experiencing network outages at their co-location in Chicago. This has caused all Merit users to have intermittent outages. Merit is currently working on the issue.

IR District leads to APECS Unavailable this Weekend
February 10-12 is time for the IR district to be created. Consequently, the system will go down at 5 PM on Friday and will remain down through Sunday evening. APECS and Weblink will be unavailable for usage during this entire weekend.

Weblink Usable..pipeserver had frozen
The law school reported problems with Weblink. Upon investigation, I found the pipeserver was in a "frozen" state. I restarted it and Weblink is once again accessable.

UNISYS Mainframe Down
The battery installation was completed successfully. Unfortunately, the mainframe did not come up correctly following reboot. UNISYS has been notified and is expected to be in sometime tomorrow morning.

Upate on Status
Regarding the 503 errors, we've yet to see a new one in a week. We consider this resolved at this time.
Regarding the up and down of the mainframe, we have UPS batteries on order to address the source of the issue that was taking the mainframe system down on a daily basis.
Regarding bandwidth issues, we are still hitting our peak levels at various times throughout the day. We're continuing to manage the bandwidth for optimal usage.

Blackboard 503 Errors Believed Resolved
Its been almost 18 hours since fine-tuning was completed on the bandwidth for Blackboard and our logs indicate no new 503 errors. We have had one user mention a 503 however we have asked the user to flush the cache/delete temp internet files and try again. If you have a 503 error pop up, please try this as well. If it persists, let the helpdesk know as soon as possible.

Blackboard 503 Errors
If you receive a 503 error when working in Blackboard, please enter a comment with the date and time it occured. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as we can.
Sporadic Connection this Morning Resolved
A number of users were unable to connect to the network this morning due to a DHCP issue. A fix has been applied and this problem should now be resolved. If you continue to experience connecticity issues, first restart your computer. If the problem persists, contact the helpdesk.

APECS Update Scheduled for this Weekend
As agreed by the departments, APECS will be patched this weekend which will include 1098 and 1099 required files. The system will be down until further notice. Please stay tuned.
We are also aware that one of the FAO servers is down. We have a call in to have someone bring it up.
Between 4pm and 5pm today we also had an IBridge crash at which time a temporary IBridge server was tested for a few minutes and then moved back off-line. We are close to replacing the existing IBridge server with a new one. More testing will be needed.
ITS will be closed for the observence of the Martin Luther King day.

I was informed that students were having difficulty with weblink. Apparently, the pipeserver program crashed...I restarted it and weblink is now operational.

APECS down earlier: Operational Now
At approximately 10:37 today (1/5/06) the IBridge connection to APECS was lost. It took approximately 10 minutes to correct the problem. APECS is operational now.
