Holiday Information - Major Upgrade starts 12/26/2010 at midnight

The TitanConnect system will be down from Sunday, December 26, 2010 until approximately Friday, December 31, 2010 to complete a major upgrade of TitanConnect Self-Service, TitanConnect INB and other modules within the TitanConnect portal solution. If the upgrade is completed earlier than Friday, December 31, 2010, the system will be made available at that time. During this time, the TitanConnect Portal, Email and Calendaring system will be available though there will be periods of time (possibly up to several hours) when these parts of the system will be unavailable. All incoming e-mail will be queued and then delivered once the TitanConnect Portal, E-mail and Calendaring system is back up. ITS will use the http://udm-its.blogspot.com outage blog to communicate details during this period of time. From Sunday, December 26, 2010 to approximately Friday, December 31, 2010 access to register for classes, submit admissions applications, review grades and all other features used within TitanConnect SSB and INB will be unavailable. Access to all other University IT services (WWW, Blackboard, blogs, helpdesk systems, etc.) will operate in auto-pilot mode. Should one of the auto-piloted systems go down, ITS will attempt to restore services when possible. Initial plan was to finish this work within one hour; however, this action will take longer than anticipated and at this time we have no reliable information on how long. Blacklisted by Hotmail

The udmercy.edu domain appears to be blacklisted by Hotmail.  This typically means any Microsoft site is blacklisting UDM.  ITS staff have been notified and will work to clear this as quickly as possible.  Service may not be restored until Monday or Tuesday depending on Hotmail’s responses to UDM’s requests.  To reach internal UDM people, send messages to their @udmercy.edu account to ensure the messages go through.

Blackboard services outage 12/03 9:15 a.m.

Due to reports on Blackboard malfunctioning in file accessing area, Blackboard service and supporting database service were restarted at 9:15 a.m. in order to restore normal services to users. This action caused some 10-15 minutes service outage. ITS will analyze available log files to try to find cause for this problem in order to prevent this kind of error in the future.

All systems up

To the best of our knowledge, all systems are up.  We are hopeful these power outages are done and we can go back to our 24/7 environment.  We are also on a holiday weekend and so systems are operating on auto-pilot.

 

All systems down - Power Outage on McNichols

Due to a campus wide outage at 12:15 pm today, all McNichols IT services may be down.

The scheduled power switch on Friday was completed during the down time and the campus is now coming back online with power.

Since IT solutions went down hard, recovery time may be longer than the standard 3 hour period. If you have access to a service, you can consider it up.

If you don't, ITS is working to restore all services as quickly as possible.

Systems that may have incurred physical or data damage due to this hard shut-down may take longer to restore.

ITS Services in Preparation for Saturday's Power Outage

In light of Facilities scheduled power outage on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 6:00 pm, ITS will begin taking servers down starting at 3:00 pm and restore access once power is available.  Critical services will be prioritized to come up first.

While all systems are down, incoming e-mail will either be queued on the sender’s e-mail server or bounce back as undeliverable.  Internet access on-campus will be down.  Access to servers from off-campus will not be available.

 

University voice-mail will be down however University phones will continue to operate.  Digital phones that plug into a wall may not ring when incoming calls are received but may be used for outgoing calls.

 

Access to the internet for the Corktown campus will be unaffected with the exception of voice-mail and access to McNichols based servers.

 

Access to the internet from the Law School campus will be down until McNichols services are restored.

ITS Services in Preparation for Both Power Outages

In preparation for the emergency electrical outage scheduled for Friday, November 18 at 6:00 am (tomorrow), ITS has already begun to take the necessary steps to protect the University’s information and systems.

 

The University’s IT environment consist of approximately 100 servers running a multitude of services, 40+ terabytes of online storage, 80 network closets and over 1000 personal computers.  To ensure the integrity of University data remains intact and the equipment is fully functional, ITS will once again take down all system and then bring them back up once power is restored.

 

Around 10:00 pm tonight, TitanNet and the Academic servers will be brought down.

 

After 3:00 am, TitanConnect, Exchange, WWW, Blackboard, Internet connectivity and all remaining devices will be brought down.

 

During these periods of time when the systems are down, electronic communication is available with ITS via the http://udm-its.blogspot.com off-site blog.

 

 

 

On Saturday, November 20, when the next scheduled power outage will take place at 6:00 pm, ITS will begin to take servers down starting at 3:00 pm and bring servers up after power is fully and finally restored (estimated by Facilities to take place around 9:00 pm).  To restore all ITS services, it takes approximately 3 hours to complete.

 

 

While all systems are down, incoming e-mail will either be queued on the sender’s e-mail server or bounce back as undeliverable.  Internet access on-campus will be down.  Access to servers from off-campus will not be available.

McNichols Power Outage Scheduled for 10:30 pm

Due to the scheduled power outages across the McNichols campus, all ITS services will be brought down starting around 9:00 pm and completely down by 10:30 pm.  Systems will be brought back online by 8:00 am.

TITANNET Network Issue

There was a slight networking issue that made TITANNET (shared drives and logon server) to become unresponsive for a period of time. The server was reset as part of fixing this issue. Since this server is setup for persistent connections, it should have reconnected your machine as soon as the server was back online.

However, if you are currently receiving an "offline" folders message in your taskbar, you will need to restart your machine and log back into the domain. Total estimated downtime was about 10 minutes.

Bandwidth Reallocated based on Term to Date Utilization

As we typically do, the allocations for bandwidth have been adjusted based on usage patterns during the first part of the term.  ITS monitors bandwidth usage closely and adjusts our allotment accordingly to ensure bandwidth is available where needed.  Please note, speeds should be fine.  We have seen more than a small number of computers that are operating slower than optimal and this appears to be the result of rogue toolbar installs as well as other programs (spyware, malware, virus’, etc.).  To improve your performance, please fine tune your systems configuration and applications.

 

Reports on performance (good or bad) are welcomed.  Please indicate location and computer details when submitting a response.  Please feel free to post to this blog entry or e-mail its@udmercy.edu.

MSN (Microsoft) Hotmail is rejecting udmercy.edu e-mails. ITS is working to remove MSN block as soon as possible. We sorry for your inconvenience; please keep in mind that this is result of UDM users providing spammers/phishing action with user ID and password to their account. Users doing this are not only inconveniencing rest of the UDM community, they open the door to their sensitive personal data.

The Content database server is experiencing a hardware issue. We are working to resolve the issue. Online inquiries, application processing, parking permits and the auctor content management system are currently down due to this issue.

Our test of e-mail system shows that MSN Hotmail is rejecting to receive our e-mails for poor reputation. We are not aware of any other ISPs rejecting our e-mails, at this time. ITS is going to work on this problem to enable free flow of our messages to Microsoft owned domains.

Blackboard Technical Support has supplied us with a new patch for our database that suppose to solve major problems reported. Blackboard outage - service restart cancelled 08/26 5:30 p.m.

Blackboard service had an outage 08/26 at 4:20 p.m. This unplanned event was used to perform Blackboard System configuration adjustment scheduled for 08/27 8:00 a.m. This scheduled system restart is, therefore, canceled.
At this time, we have report on number of problems with the new Blackboard and ITS together with the Blackboard Support team is working diligently on sorting out these issues.

Blackboard - School year rotation 08/24 8:00 a.m.

As a part of preparation for the new school year and moving to the new HW/SW platform, Knowledge2 is taken offline. Bit later, main Blackboard system will be taken offline as well - users are advised to close and log off at this time to avoid possible loss of work.

Important Notice: When the new Blackboard system become available, users have to use TitanConnect login credentials (user ID and password). Once you log in, you are able to synchronize your Blackboard password with your TitanConnect password; please do so. While Blackboard is checking your credentials primarily against TC database, in certain circumstances (error in TC system) you still will be able to log in to Blackboard - in this exceptional situation Blackboard will allow log in using Blackboard own database - if your local Blackboard password is synchronized with your TC password.

Hotmail bounce UDM e-mails 08/23 7:30 a.m.

Due to (yet again) hijacking user account credentials, our e-mail system was compromised and served as a vehicle for spam mail. That resulted in blacklisting of our outgoing server and MSN Hotmail domain (and most likely others) is rejecting our messages.

ITS is working on restoring normal e-mail services.

Again, do not reveal your user id and password to any inquiry you get in your e-mail. Don't ever send your credential using e-mail. Beside causing lot of grief for other members of our community you expose yourself to identity theft.

Knowledge2 Blackboard maintenance 08/20 8:00 a.m - 12:00 p.m.

As a part of switching over to Blackboard Enterprise version, Knowledge2 Blackboard system will be taken offline 08/20 at 8:00 a.m. Knowledge2 is moving to completely new hardware and software platform that will enable new and exciting features and content for Blackboard users. New platform is expected to improve overall performance and response time of Blackboard system, as well.

Estimated time, needed to transfer existing Knowledge2, is 4 hours.

Users are advised to finish their session and log out of Knowledge2 before 8 a.m. to avoid possible loss of work.

After this switch is done, new system will use authentication from Titan Connect and users will have to use their Titan Connect credentials for Blackboard Knowledge2, only. If existing password for your Knowledge2 account is different from your TC password, you will not be able to log in using your old Knowledge2 password.

We apologize for possible inconvenience during this outage, and we hope that our future experience with Blackboard will justify investment into this new system.

Nexus Application Server Online

All services have been restored.

Nexus Application Server Offline

The nexus application server is currently offline due to a drive failure. Affected services include the University catalog system, online inquiries and application processing.

E-mail bounce - Hotmail 08/18 7:30 a.m.

For compromised e-mail account of our e-mail system and consequent spammers abuse, MSN - Hotmail (and possibly other ISPs) is rejecting e-mail originated at University e-mail servers.

Again, users are not suppose to reveal their user ID and password in response to any (and especially unsolicited) e-mail correspondence. Not only that this causes abuse of our e-mail system and consequent troubles to deliver e-mail to our correspondents, this makes very sensitive personal data accessible and opens door to identity theft.

ITS is going to take steps to re-enable undisturbed e-mail flow.

TitanConnect Portal/Email Maintenance This Weekend

In an effort to have all systems ready to go for the start of the upcoming academic year, the ITS department will be performing several maintenance tasks this weekend that will result in down-time for all.

 

From Friday at 6:00 pm to midnight, the TitanConnect Portal/Email system will be down for a cold backup as well as implementation of several software patches.  All incoming e-mail will be queued and delivered once the system has been brought back online.

 

Then, on Saturday morning starting at 8:00 am and running to approximately 2:00 pm, the TitanConnect Portal/Email system will be down while necessary maintenance occurs on the hardware and additional e-mail storage space is added into the @udmercy.edu domain.  All incoming e-mail will be queued and delivered once the system has been brought back online.

 

During all of this time, access to the course evaluation, www, Cascade and the Blackboard servers will remain available.  On campus internet access for Web surfing will remain available for anyone on-site during this time.

Knowledge 2 maintenance on 08/10 7:30 a.m. -7:40 a.m.

Knowledge 2 users will not be able to use the system on Wednesday 08/11 between 7:30 and 7:40 a.m. Defective piece of hardware has to replaced and that requires Knowledge 2 Blackboard system to be restarted. System will be down for a short time, but all users are advised to log out before 7:30 a.m. to prevent possible loss of data.

E-mail to Hotmail accounts rejected 08/10 7:30 a.m.

Some of UDMERCY e-mail accounts were compromised caused by users revealing there e-mail account credentials to spammers, resulting in abuse of those accounts. As a result, MSN Hotmail (and possibly some other Internet Service Providers) is rejecting e-mail messages originated at University . ITS works to resolve the situation and we expect to have this problem solved soon.

Again: One should never reveal personal data as a response to an e-mail, no matter how convincing that e-mail may be. In this case, one "only" disturbed free e-mail flow and caused inconvenience for thousands of University e-mail users; negligent behavior like this may cause much more grave consequences.

TITANNET Planned Outage

The TITANNET domain will be down August 9th for approximately 30 minutes to address a hardware issue. We expect it to be back online without issue by 5:15PM.

Cascade Upgrade Update

The cascade software upgrade has been completed. Cascade is online and operational, but we remain in testing until tomorrow morning when the system will be released for production usage. We ask that users limit their activity to operations that are absolutely necessary at this time.

Knowledge2 available 07/30 11:30 a.m.

Blackboard system running on knowledge2.udmercy.edu is on line and available to users. Users may notice somewhat lower performance compared to previous experience, while accessing this system. We appreciate your patience.

Knowledge2 goes offline 07/30 at 9:00 a.m.

Knowledge2 Blackboard system is going to be taken offline at 9:00 a.m. and transferred to new hardware platform as a part of preparations on moving to Blackboard Enterprise system.
Users are advised to finish their work and log out before 9:00 a.m. in order to avoid possible loss of work.
Knowledge2 is expected to go online around 12:00 p.m. System availability will be announced in blogger.

TurnItIn Restored

Licensing for TurnItIn was restore around 3:00 pm today.  All should work as it normally should.

 

TurnItIn Temporarily in Read-Only Mode

We are experiencing a similar issue to that from two weeks ago with UDM’s TurnItIn service.  We are working with the vendor to clear the issue and hope to have this resolved within hours.

 

 

Knowledge 2 (Blackboard 9.1) planned service outage on July 30, 9:00 a.m.

In course of preparations to move Blackboard system to Enterprise Version, service on knowledge2.udmercy.edu (Blackboard 9.1) will be interrupted on Friday, July 30; at 9:00 a.m. Service will be restored later on that day. Expected service outage time is 3 hours. All users using knowledge2 services are advised to finish their work and close open sessions before 9:00 a.m.
Service on knowledge.udmercy.edu (Blackboard 8) is not going to be affected by this operation.

TITANNET/Exchange Connectivity Restored...

Maintenance for the TITANNET/Exchange environment has been completed. We were able to restore functionality, but minor outages may still occur as we transisiton over to the new equipment.

Reminder - TitanNet/Exchange Maintenance Scheduled for 5:00 pm Today

Reminder - Today, UDM’s TitanNet (not TitanConnect) Windows domain environment will be brought down for maintenance starting at 5:00 pm.  All users should be logged off by that time.  We anticipate TitanNet and its related services will return to full operation by 8:00 pm that evening.  Information about the work will be posted to the UDM ITS Outage Blog at http://udm-its.blogspot.com.

 

During this time, access to the TitanConnect Portal/Email system will remain fully functional.

 

Users will not be able to access their TitanNet home or group drives from their desktop computers or remote connections.  Exchange users will be able to continue to use their Outlook client to read and write messages however all incoming and outgoing messages will be queued.

 

Users who do not access the TitanNet system (i.e. Law School) will not be affected in any way by this short outage.

As of this morning, users can log into their junk boxes.  There are a few remaining issues the vendor’s technical support is working through to complete this project.  One of those items is the ability for individual users to add their own people and companies to personal allowed list.

We are aware of the problem, and we are taking steps to correct it. If you are seeing periods of Exchange down-time, please let us know when you find the system not sending or receiving. All messages are queued, so delivery is made for all after the system is reconnected.

Starting at 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 8, 2010, UDM's Mailborder SPAM solution will be upgraded. This upgrade will involve queueing of incoming e-mail while the system is worked on. We anticipate this may up to three hours of time.

Email delivery to certain external sites problem solved 06/23 9:00 a.m.

Due to power and consequent cooling problem in system room this weekend, some of the services went down and were not restored to fully operational status. Emails to certain number of IS providers was hold in queue and didn't reach final destinations. This problem was not detected on time.
At this time, services are up and all the pending emails are delivered to recipients.

Exchange Mail Issue

Exchange Mail is down for about 25% of our Exchange users. We're having a problem bringing up the information store that holds the mailboxes for some people. The repair could take considerable time, but we have no estimate yet. All messages being received for affected Exchange Users should be queued up for delivery once the repair is done, but there is no work-around at this time to receive your messages.

Law School - Power Outage

Law School wntwork services are unavailable due to a power outage the Law School.  Connections from the clinics may fail as a result of this.  Awaiting Facilities restoration of power.  All equipment is scheduled to auto-start once power is available.

Rebooting XP systems/ NT_Authority Issue - UPDATE

ITS has confirmed that the XP rebooting issue is the McAfee issue that has been reported in the media. ITS staff have the suggested resolution to the problem and will be testing tonight. If results are positive then ITS will begin to implement the resolution tomorrow. If your system has been affected by this please contact the helpdesk @3-1500 or helpdesk@udmercy.edu.

NT_Authority Message

The University is currently experiencing a university wide issue. The issue is an error message states that NT_Authority is starting a automatic shutdown of your system. If you receive this error please power off your system immediately and notify helpdesk @3-1500. ITS is currently investigating and working on a solution. Please check back for updates.

This issue appears to be a world wide issue as ITS has seen several reports that this issue is not isolated to the University. It appears to be an issue with McAfee AV falsely identifying key Window files as a virus. ITS staff is working on a solution to the issue now. Please check back for further updates

Student E-mail - Changes

On Friday, ITS retired the legacy students.udmercy.edu system. If you married your accounts together, your e-mail sent to your @students.udmercy.edu account will be redirected to your @udmercy.edu account. If you didn't marry your accounts, then your @students.udmercy.edu messages to you are being rejected since your old account no longer exists.

If you didn't forward/redirect your e-mail from the old system to the new system prior to the retirement, we regret but access to do this is no longer available. For four months instructions and readily available Helpdesk support to answer related questions was available.

The TitanConnect e-mail solution has much to offer. Please visit it.udmercy.edu and look into the documentation section for more information on the new e-mail system.

Voice-Mail, Res Life, CHP/Lansing Reilly Access Issues

Coincidental to the core switch replacement, there appears to be an infrastructure issue with 2 of 3 pairs of Fiber to that end of campus. A temporary workaround is in place and a repair crew has been called out to assess the situation for a more permanent fix. This accounts for issues related to voice mail, CHP and Lansing Reilly.

The resident halls are still down as a result of the core network switch and will shortly be addressed. It is expected by about 2:00 pm before the work is complete. Gradually, buildings will come online prior to that time. Users may need to reboot their computer to establish a good connection.

Update on Core Network Switch Replacement

Due to building access issues, the work on the switch was delay an hour. Access to the network is up in some but not all areas at this time. Everything has gone well and it will only be a short-time before you should be able to get to the network.

All core network services -TC, TitanNet, email, internet are up and running for buildings with access.

Just a quick reminder that all internet and cross network services will be down from approximately 4:00 am to 8:00 am while a new core network switch is installed.  Your patience during this time is most appreciated.  The core network switch is the primary device that moves packets between networks on campus as well as to the internet via a router.  A biologist may think of the core network switch as the heart of the network.

ITS-Labs

The Student Union lab will be open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday.  Other labs may be opened for overflow,  if necessary.

 

ITS-Helpdesk

The ITS-Helpdesk will be open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday and will be open for drop-in, email, phone or online support.

 

ITS-AV

The ITS-AV office will be open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday.

Beginning Monday, March 8, 2010 at 6:30 am and ending by 8:00 am, TitanConnect e-mail will be temporarily unavailable while the ITS-Enterprise team perform a number of maintenance tasks.  The rest of the TitanConnect portal will be available for use during this period of time.

 

Core Network Maintenance Window - Wednesday of Spring Break Week

Beginning Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 4:00 am and ending by 8:00 am, the entire McNichols network and internet access across all campuses will be temporarily down while ITS-Networking installs a new core network switch.  Access within the Dental campus to Dental resources will not be impacted as is true with Law Campus computers and Law Campus resources.

The web hosting server has been brought back up.

The web hosting account server (people/faculty/orgs.udmercy.edu)is experiencing a network issue. The Web Services and Network Team are working to resolve the issue.

Power issue for several boxes that held up e-mail.  All queued messages are being delivered.

Blackboard Maintenance - Service Outage Monday 03/01 7:30 a.m.

For technical reasons, we have scheduled Blackboard hardware maintenance which will cause service outage. Blackboard service will be shut down Monday, March 1 at 7:30 a.m. Estimated time needed to accomplish necessary service/repair is 30 minutes. Please log out and finish your work BEFORE 7:30 a.m.; you may experience loss of data if you don't do so. Update on status of Blackboard service will be announced in this blog.

The Dental Campus is currently experiencing problems with it's phone system. The Patient Appointment Line(4-6700) is working but all else is non-functioning. We are currently working to resolve the issue and will update as we know more.

Wireless in Shiple Dorm

There have been several reports of issues with the wireless in Shiple. The issue has been that the available address space for the Shiple wireless was completely used. ITS has made several changes this evening (January 28, 2010) to address this issue. However,due to these changes clients may receive a duplicate IP address warning. If this happens please reboot your system and/or turn your wireless off and on. Cascade, web calendar, blogs Off Line

Hardware failure has taken cascade, web calendar and blogs off line. Vendor is ordering equipment. We will update when we have status.

Update 5:30 p.m. A new server is being shipped overnight.

Update Wednesday Jan. 6, 10:00 a.m. : Server hardware has been picked up and is being tested. Will be on campus around 12:00 p.m.

Update Wednesday Jan. 6 2:00 p.m. : Hardware has been installed. Operating system load started.

Update Thursday Jan. 7 8:00 a.m. : Hardware burn in discovered drive faults. New drives shipped over night. Will be on campus at 8:15 a.m.

Cascade, web calendar and blogs will be off line beginning at 10:00 a.m. January 5th for hardware replacement. We will update as the work progresses.

1:00 p.m. Full backups have completed and hardware replacement has started.

3:15 p.m. All services have been restored.

Happy New Year - System Status for APECS, Hotmail, Blogs/Calendar/Cascade

During the break, several systems experienced technical difficulty.

 

Apecs was reported down and will be looked at first thing Monday.

 

Hotmail is still blacklisting @udmercy.edu and the team will work to clear our good name as quickly as possible.

 

Blogs/Calendar/Cascade were down for short periods of time during break but brought back online by dedicated staff who had to come on-site.  A more permanent repair is needed on this server and will be scheduled as quickly as possible.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year - Issues during break, comment them here

The Information Technology Services department wishes all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Y2K+10 years!

From 12/23/09 at 5:00 PM to 1/4/09 at 7:30 AM all of UDM systems will be on auto-pilot.  While you are enjoying the break, the ITS staff will also take some “downtime”.

During this period all websites, Blackboard server, TitanConnect Banner, APECS, e-mail servers, file servers, the phone system and our cable stations will run as normal.  In the event there is a technical problem, you may report it to ITS by posting a comment on the ITS blog at http://udm-its.blogspot.com.  When you post a comment on the blog, an ITS staff member is immediately notified by pager.  We will try to reach the appropriate staff person to attempt to resolve the problem and we will use the ITS blog as the place for two-way communication.  By using the blog, everyone has the opportunity to see two-way communications on reported issues and the current status.

Tickets submitted into the Helpdesk system will be periodically looked at, as well as messages on the Helpdesk phone line listened to, and answered when possible or upon return to campus.

If you have availability while off and access to a computer, here are a few things you could do on UDM’s systems.

1.       Update your address information in TitanConnect Self-Service.

2.       Students who have not already done so, should “marry” their @students.udmercy.edu account to their new @udmercy.edu account.

3.       If you have an open tickets in the ITS Helpdesk system and need to respond with a status update, please update your tickets at http://helpdesk.udmercy.edu.

4.       Empty your TitanConnect e-mail Trash.

5.       Download the UDM screen saver available from the it.udmercy.edu page and install it on your PC computer or give it to a friend.

6.       Review the tips and documentation available at http://it.udmercy.edu related to various IT solutions at the University.

7.       Register for emergency alerts at http://www.udmercy.edu/publicsafety/ealerts/.  If you live outside of Wayne County, use UDM’s street address.

8.       If you have not already done so and are eligible to register, register for your Term II and III classes on http://tc.udmercy.edu

9.       Reset your security questions and answers in TitanConnect to something more secure and something that you will not forget.
