College/Department Web Server Maintenance

Between 10:00 p.m. December 26th and 1:00 a.m. December 27th the College/Department web server will have periodic service interruptions of between 5 and 15 minutes due to web server upgrades. During this time period the following sites will be affected :

All systems are back up after power failure

All previously-reported systems are back up and functional. Please let us know if you still are having problems with anything at this point.

Several Systems are Down

Home and Group drives for much of McNichols Campus as well as Exchange Email services are currently down. We are looking at possble power problems, and are working to restore these services. If you notice any other network services that are down, please post a reply to this blog posting.

Exchange Email down briefly

It was brought to our attention that the Exchange Email server was not functioning correctly at about 1:00pm today. We corrected it by 1:15pm. You should not have to do anything to reconnect your Outlook to the Exchange server. It is automatic.

MSN/Hotmail users can get UDM e-mails delivered; MSN lifted the ban affecting delivery of e-mails sent by UDM e-mail system.

Cascade Content Management Online

The Cascade Server Web content management system is back online. Please be advised that content changes made between 11:57 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. will have to be resubmitted, but are already on the website if they were published.

Email Servers Blacklisted

As a result of several compromised e-mail accounts that were used for spamming, several university e-mail servers were blacklisted by the major e-mail sites. ITS is working with these sites to have our addresses cleared from their blacklists. This takes time.

For future reference, please never respond to any e-mail asking you for your user name or password no matter how legit it looks. ITS NOR ANY UDM DEPARTMENT WILL EVER ASK YOU OR REQUIRE THIS INFORMATION BY EMAIL.

EMAS is working

The EMAS system on the Admissions Server seems to be stable. It stayed up all day yesterday and overnight. We're keeping a close eye on this server, but if you get kicked out of EMAS and/or lose your O: drive, please contact the Helpdesk ASAP.

EMAS not available

Users of EMAS are having problems this morning, continued from Friday. The server is having problems providing the O: drive, and this is making EMAS fail. It does not appear to be a hardware issue, so the good news is that the fix should be simple. We'll keep this blog updated, so check frequently. Network and Internet issues

We are experiencing widespread internet and network problems on the McNichols campus this morning. Our DHCP server is currently down, and many machines are unable to get IP Addressing which is necessary for network communication. We expect this to be back up and running well before 9:00 AM. After this, a reboot of your workstation will be required. Check this blog often to get an updated status.

Server Maintenance Complete

Our work on the TITANNET servers is complete. All servers and services are back up and fully functional. If you are missing any network resource, and if you have not done so already, please REBOOT your computer. If after logging back in you still are not fully functional, please call the Helpdesk at 3-1500.

At 12:00 pm today the TitanNet and Exchange servers will be brought offline for approximately 30 minutes to resolve a network slowness issue experienced in several areas of the University.  We would recommend logging off prior to that time.

TITANNET Network Drives Unavailable

Some of our Titannet users have been getting a very persistent 'network disconnect' error this morning. In addition, they've lost some of their network drives, such as H:, G:, I:, Z: or others. We have found the problem and corrected it. Your drives may appear again on their own, or you may have to LOGOFF and LOGIN again for the drives to appear.

If you still are missing one or more network drive letters, please contact the Helpdesk at 3-1500.

Faculty/Staff retired

The has been officially retired. All active employee and retiree accounts that contact us during the required time were converted to the new system.

The new e-mail system is at

If you do not have an account on that system, please have your supervisor complete the account application paperwork and submit it to ITS. The account creation process takes up to 5 days after HR has confirmed and entered the information into the system.

There were a number of users on the old system who were not officially removed at there time of departure from UDM. Those accounts have been closed down.

We have learned but have been unable to confirm that resident users are experiencing extreme slowness when using Facebook.  We know this is an important site for all and are looking for more information on the problem and a solution.

E-mail in queues fully processed

All e-mail that has been sitting in the incoming queue has now been fully processed and the queue is empty.


Hourly UDM received approximately 20,000 to 30,000 messages per hour.  Of those messages, 90% are SPAM.  Of the remaining messages, approximately 60% are for students and 40% for administration.  Of the 60% for students, 10% of those are from facebook providing facebook subscribers info about activities on their profile.

We continue to process incoming mail about an hour behind schedule.  A significant volume of mail is coming in and our queues are processing through the load.

E-mail backed up

We experienced a huge amount of incoming e-mail over the weekend, primarily spam, that has backed up our queues. The e-mail is continuing to be processed through. You may find you receive new messages before older ones as new ones will sometimes pass the queue and go straight to delivery. This morning there is about 180,000 messages of which it is fair to say 10% are legit.

Apecs and Weblink are now available. The machine room is still very warm. The air conditioning is expected to be fully restored within the hour. However, it is possible that the system may go down again if the room gets too warm before then. ITS Dept.

Mainframe Down due to Air Conditioning Problem

The air conditioning unit in the computer room has a compressor problem. Without air conditioning, the mainframe computer must be shut down. This means that APECS and WEBLINK will be down until the the air conditioning unit has been fixed. Repairs have been started.

E-Mail Sending Problem

We have discovered that our outgoing e-mail is being blacklisted by a certain organization that filters e-mail for some of the major companies (i.e. Dell, CDWG).  We are working to clear our good name and restore email communications to these areas.


If you send to someone using this filtering service, you will get a rejection statement.  We are told that should automatically clear in 6 hours.

An internal computer operated by an on-campus third party contractor was the culprit in taking the Internet down. The computer has been permanently banned from the network and all Internet services appear to be operating as they should.

CHP/LR and Voice-Mail Down

It’s been almost 24 hours since the break in the connection to the CHP, Lansing Reilly and Voice-Mail system.  Yesterday, contractors were lined up with the proper testing equipment to determine the extent of the breakage in the tunnel.  Access to this space is restricted due to concrete work taking place in the same location.  The first opportunity for on-site access for repairs is Friday morning.  Repairs and testing will take a few hours.  Please stay tuned for more information.

CHP/Lansing Reilly and Voice-Mail Down

Due to complications related to external construction work, network connectivity to the Lansing Reilly building and the CHP building is presently down.


All dial-by-name and voice-mail service is also down since the AT&T equipment is located on the segment of the network where the current problem exists.


The repair work is fairly extensive and we hope to have it completed by Friday.

The College of Health Professions Bilding and Lansing Reilly are not able to reach Titannet or the network in general. It could be related to the digging and construction on campus. We are urgently looking into this. It does appear to be related to the voice-mail and telephone problems that much of McNichols campus is experiencing right now.

We have no estimated time for resolution for this as we are still assessing the problem.

The server UDM-TN-DENTAL was rebooted this morning at 9:30am to fix issues reported to ITS. This was mainly a problem that some people had in reaching their HOME drive (H: ). This should be working for everyone now.

If you know that your HOME or GROUP drive is on UDM-TN-DENTAL, or if you are having problems getting to your any network drives, please LOGOFF and log back in again. You should have all of your network access again.

Lansing-Reilly & CHP network bounce

BlackBoard Update - 5:15pm

The drive rebuild is complete, however, the original server is unusable. The data for both the application and the database has been recovered from the failed system and is currently being migrated to the second server. This migration of data is expected to take several more hours.

Streaming Server Maintenance Completed

Maintenance on has been completed. All streaming services have been restored.

Blackboard Update at 10:00 am

The network team worked through the night to rebuild the bad drive.  The process requires a significant amount of time and is still running.  While this is occurring, a plan B has been put into action to bring up the second server and restore all data to it.  We anticipate it will be several more hours before this process is complete.

Blackboard Still Down

Update on Blackboard status 05/14 5:10 p.m.

Blackboard outage is caused by hardware failure. Procedure to preserve integrity of content is running at this time. Time needed for this procedure is approximately 2 hours.

Knowledge/Blackboard Server Down

The server is temporarily down due to a hard drive issue.  Work will continue until it is back up.


Weblink Available 9:30 AM on 5/14/08

The physical move of the Weblink server is complete. The Weblink application is available as of 9:30 AM. Thank you, ITS Dept.

Dental server issue

The Dental server UDM-TN-DENTAL was rebooted at 8:50am because of memory pool problems. Our users could not get to any network resources on that server. The reboot will clear up the issue, and we will investigate into what caused the memory leak.

Streaming Server Maintenance will be off line from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m Thursday, May 15th for maintenance. All streaming services will be unavailable during this time.

Academic Lab Server Temporarily Down

The server is temporarily down for relocation and will be up in less than 30 minutes.

UHC + Corktown Connectivity

There is currently an effort by ATT to restore 2(two) T1 Lines. One of these lines provides Data to UHC - the other provides partial service to the phone system at Corktown. Unless the phone traffic at Corktown increases substantially users may not even notice a problem. However, the Data at UHC is offline at present. Both problem are being handled by ATT and should be repaired soon. We will update when the work has been completed. Thank You.

Weblink access for students will be turned off today at 3 PM. This is to allow faculty full access to update grades. Sometime around noon on Monday, students will be allowed to access Weblink again.

Titannet server restarted

The Titannet server UDM-AD-DOMAIN was briefly disconnected and restarted at 10:55am. It was brought right back up and is fully functional.

During the down time some of our users would have been disconnected from their drives G: , H: , and other network drives.

Long Distance @ Dental Campus

Our Long Distance Carrier "Cavalier" has restored Long Distance capabilities at the Corktown Dental Campus. Extensive testing has been done to confirm that it is indeed working as it should be. Update on voice-mail issue

As many know, the University began to experience a problem with voice-mail system this past Friday as posted on the outage blog on (which is also available directly at  Technically, the problem lies not with the voice-mail system but the hand-off of the call from our Centrex system to our voice-mail system.  Centrex is not properly passing the calls to the voice-mail system.  One quick work-around for those who need to get into their voice-mail box, dial the full 9,993-6440 to enter directly into the voice-mail system.


Along with this hand-off problem, we are also experiencing problems using 5 digit dialing.


AT&T was on-site Friday and returned today to continue to work on the situation.  No additional information is available at this time.

SPAM Solution Update

Significant progress has been made in processing back-logged messages.  Although some SPAM has come through, we appear to be within hours of having all unprocessed messages delivered.


Blackboard outage 04/04 at 11:35

Blackboard service was interrupted shortly today at 11:35 due to system overload. Services are restarted which caused 2 minutes out of services for Blackboard users.
ITS apologizes for this inconvenience.

Voice-Mail Randomly Failing

A problem has been identified with the voice-mail system randomly failing to allow callers to leave a message.  The problem does not appear to be with the voice-mail system but with the phone service provider.  ITS Telecomm is working with AT&T to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.

Some Encouraging SPAM/Internet E-mail News

After our trying a number of different approaches at the instructions of SonicWall (the SPAM solutions vendor) and after sending a snapshot of the activity on our spam box, SonicWall has discovered the location of a programming bug within the code that is causing slowness in the delivery and processing of internet mail.  The discovery came around 7:00 pm EST.  Since that time they have been working on a solution and we are standing by to implement it.  It appears this will drag into Friday.

Update on E-Mail/Spam Situation

We regret this issue is continuing to drag on but we are working to get it resolved as quickly as possible.  The problem stems somewhat from our work to get the Emergency Notification System e-mail messages automatically coming into the University and delivered to all users.


In getting our existing solution to accommodate this, we added a “front door” system in front of our SPAM solution.  Our front door system takes in all e-mail and validates sender credentials.  Messages sent from a valid sender are then transferred over for SPAM analysis.  It is this “transfer” where our problem exists.  Messages are not being transferred at the normal or acceptable rate.  Messages come across approximately at a rate of 4,000-8,000 per hour.  We should be seeing 30,000-55,000 per hour.  We are working with our solutions provider to resolve the matter.

TitanConnect Down

TitanConnect went down around 3:00 pm today during planning for next week’s training.  The staff are working to resolve the matter and return it to service as quickly as possible.  All data is fine; the application server is where the difficulty is being experienced.

Yahoo Mail

All mail service to Yahoo has been temporally suspended by Yahoo. For an unknown reason, Yahoo has blocked or email servers from their systems. ITS staff is working to have the block removed by Yahoo.

Network Issue Stabilization

The network connectivity problems from last week have temporarily been resolved by reverting back to the original wireless bridge to the Internet.  After the Easter holiday, another attempt will be made to move to the repaired and permanent higher speed wireless bridge.

Weblink Time Set Incorrectly - Fixed

The Weblink server had an incorrect time setting this morning as a result of a time adjustment service running in the background. This has been corrected. During the time that this was incorrect, Weblink was reporting that the service is only available from 7:15 AM to 10 PM even though it was 8 AM. Raiser's Edge Server Down

The server ADVANCESVR is down this morning because of a hardware failure. Users that map an O: drive to this server may receive an error, along with a "disconnected" failure. Raiser's Edge is not functional because of this.

It is difficult to say how long this may take to fix. We will keep this blog updated, and Stephanie Landers will send out an Email message when it is back up.

Exchange Email and Titan Net Affected

The same issue that was affecting Student Email was also having an impact on Exchange Email and TitanNet users.

You may have been getting messages on the lower-right corner of your main Windows desktop saying that you have been disconnected from the domain. Also, Email may not have been working - both incoming and outgoing.

These issues should be cleared up as of 1:00pm.

This resolution does not mean that the existing Student Email issue has been fixed. Only EXCHANGE Email, and TitanNet connection issues have been resolved.
