Blackboard service restored - Dec.26 1:00 p.m.

For reasons unknown at this time, Blackboard stopped accepting log ins. Thank you for your contribution to this blog and notifying ITS of this problem. Alternative possibility is to open helpdesk ticket using http://helpdesk.udmercy.edu.

Full Blackboard service was re-established by 1 p.m. ITS is working on identifying of problem source to prevent possible future incidents of this kind.

VOICEMAIL RESTORED

The Voicemail System has been upgraded and has been brought back up into service.  The system has been thoroughly tested and seems to be performing as expected.

VOICEMAIL UPGRADE

This is a reminder and follow-up to the E-Mail that everyone received.  Voicemail is being brought down and will be OUT OF SERVICE at approximately 5:00pm today(Dec 19th).  We will perform certain upgrades and will notify by this blog when service has been restored.  It could be anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.  Thanks for your understanding and patience for this needed regular maintenance.

Dorms Internet System test planned – Thursday Dec. 20



ITS will perform series of tests related to Dorms Internet Service supply, starting at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 20.
Goal of the test is to check high availability system in place and ensure that Dorms get best possible Internet Service in different scenarios. Most of the scenarios tested won’t visibly affect Internet service for Dorms; we plan on short full outage in service that won’t last longer than 5 minutes, though.
Total time to perform tests is less than one hour.

AOL Mail

AOL was accepting email from udmercy.edu again and had delivered all of the queued up messages at about 7:00 PM yesterday.  BUT they've started blocking us again this morning.  We have a ticket opened with them, and we're hoping for a quick resolution.

AOL.com is blocking mail from our users.  This is in response to recent account compromises we've had due to PHISHING SCAMS.  We've requested to be unblocked, but so far AOL has declined.  We are working with them to allow our mail to be sent, but you may need to take alternate means to reach AOL users.

Titan Connect Services restored

Titan Connect services have been restored.

Titan Connect Portal Restart

We are experiencing a high load on the Titan Connect portal servers. We are currently restarting services.

Blackboard Software Maintenance Dec. 18 at 7:30 a.m.



Blackboard has released software patches to address reported issues. Installation of these patches requires system taken off-line and we plan to perform this action on Tuesday, December 18 starting at 7:30 a.m. Expected service outage is 30 minutes. Please don’t plan on using Blackboard services between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m.; if you are using Blackboard, Tuesday morning, please close your session and log out before 7:30 to avoid possible loss of data.

Voice-Mail Maintenance & Upgrade - 12/19/12 @ 5:00 pm

Advance Notice

 

Please be advised that UDM’s voice-mail system will be unavailable from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 to perform necessary maintenance and install a software upgrade.

 

While we don’t expect to lose any voice-mail, it is advisable that employees with voice-mail process any unheard messages prior to this time.

 

Callers to lines with voice-mail will simply continue to ring until answered just as lines without voice-mail.

 

Callers to phone-trees such as 993-1000 will receive a message indicating the system is down for maintenance.

 

Should the work be completed prior to the estimated completion time of 9:00 pm, the system will be brought online earlier than expected.

COMCAST blocking **UPDATED

COMCAST is blocking email from udmercy.edu email addresses because of recent compromized accounts and the SPAM that was sent as a result.   We are working with Comcast to have them open us back up, but it could take several hours today.

We have cleared up our problem with Comcast, and they are once again accepting email from UDMercy.EDU.

Law School - Internet Connection - Unstable

As mentioned last week, there is an issue with connectivity to the Law School.  Staff worked on the issue through the weekend and will continue to work to resolve it as quickly as possible.

Alternative solutions are being lined up for implementation as permanent backup options to the existing environment.

Users will experiencing slowness and periodic outages that may last a few minutes to an hour.

Dental School WIFI Temporarily Down

Please be advised the Dental School WIFI and UHC WIFI are temporarily down.  The outage started late Friday night and IT staff have been on-site investigating the issue.  Replacement parts will be installed early Monday and we believe this will resolve the issue.

 

We strongly suggest you come prepared with a your network cable to plug your tablet into the wired ports in the clinic or the classrooms.

Law School Internet Connectivity

Internet connectivity on the Law School campus will be up and down until 12 pm when it will be down for repair.  We regret this inconvenience but we need to take some corrective steps to avoid any long-term outages.  Please see the message sent by email on Thursday about the particulars for this planned outage.

Blackboard issues with courses 11/26 9:30 a.m.

Users report being unable to access large number of courses after software upgrade. Blackboard Tech Support is involved and we are working on problem solution. We don't have ETA on possible fix.

After start of Blackboard service we received reports on users not being able to access large number of courses. At this time we performed corrective action and all courses should be accessible.Blackboard Tech Support is involved in finding the cause and developing permanent fix for this problem.

McAuley Clinic - Conner still down

We have been updated by the circuit provider that there is a confirmed physical cable run in the area that was dug up or otherwise damaged.  They had technicians working into the night to repair the damage, and we will be updated with their progress this morning.  The circuit is still DOWN as of 8:00am.

UPDATED***   There is now an estimate that the repairs will be completed by WEDNESDAY at 8:00am.

McAuley Clinic CONNER circuit issue

We have not been able to communicate across the circuit from McNichols to Conner Street Clinic.  The circuit provider has been notified, and they are checking it out.  They did indicate there are some widespread phone issues they're aware of in the Detroit area, and this could be related. 

The outage will not affect eClinical functionality to CCS, Joy/Southfield, or Schulze locations.

Dorms Internet Status **** UPDATE 10.31 11:30 a.m.



Comcast, our ISP for Internet access in Dorms, is still working on resolving intermittent issues affecting Internet access for Dorms. We experience these issues as a short inaccessibility to Internet sources or as a poor response to our requests. Access to University resources is not affected by these issues.

As a consequence of Comcast intervention in pursuing these problems, Dorms have serious difficulties in accessing Internet, this morning between 10:30 and 11:30.

Dorms Internet access works on full capacity at this time. Comcast and ITS is going to continue close monitoring so we can fix problems and provide best possible Internet service.

Dorm Network Internet access limited - Oct. 23 11:00 a.m.



We had intermittent, short duration, issues with Internet pipe supplying Dorms with the Internet service for several days, and ISP was not able to track these problems to their source. This morning this line went completely down and Dorm Network is running on backup network now, with much lower than normal capacity. Users are noticing poor, slow service and time outs on loading web sites of the Internet. Access to University (udmercy.edu) network is not affected.
Please limit your use of Internet to absolutely necessary at this time. We don’t have reliable information on how long this situation may last. Please check this site for updates and information on repairing process progress.

Dorms Internet access at full capacity Oct. 15, 3:15 p.m.

Due to our ISP service action on our Dorms Network, we had to switch Dorms Internet access to the backup line with much lower capacity at 2:45 p.m. today, October 15. Service action is concluded and Dorms Network is supplied with full capacity now. We hope that this service action will terminate occasional hiccups that we had in this network last several days.

Our ISP has performed technical check and taken corrective action on Dorms Internet pipe. Our service should improve as result of this action and we don't expect occasional drops in service like we had in the last couple of days.

Blackboard released set of patches for their software. This patches are targeting reported issues and suppose to improve quality of service. McNichols Dorm Internet issues reported - ISP crew working **** UPDATE

ITS received reports on occasional problems in accessing Internet from dorms on McNichols campus. Analysis lead to locate source of problem being in ISP network. Issue manifested as occasional poor response in web browsing, lasting less than 2 minutes at the time. ISP provided us with information that they have a crew working to fix the problem affecting us and our neighborhood. They expect this problem to be solved by the end of the day or, possibly, tomorrow.

We are still experiencing occasional short drops of service on ISP end. ISP has scheduled technicians to perform physical check of their installation in our location this morning, Oct. 12, between 8 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. In the course of their troubleshooting/repair action they will have to shutdown the main pipe that supplies dorms with Internet service. This interruption won’t last long and dorms network will be running on backup line with lowered capacity.

McAuley Clinic circuit down ***UPDATED

We lost connectivity between the McAuley Clinic site and McNichols.  This will keep Connor people from connecting to eClinical, but not the Joy-Southfield or CCS locations.  The circuit provider found the issue we reported, and they are currently working on the solution.  It could require an on-site visit, but an update is expected by 12:15PM today.

***UPDATED:
As of 8:30PM yesterday, this circuit has been restored.  A field technician found the issue and fixed it.

McNichols Network Outage Scheduled for 10/2/12 @ 6:00am

For those keeping score, we have had two core network outages during the past month (9/7/12 and 9/28/12) that have temporarily disabled the entire McNichols network for a short period of time.  To address the source of the problem and reduce the risk of this issue reoccurring, ITS will be applying several patches to our core network switch tomorrow morning, Tuesday, October 2, 2012 starting at 6:00 am.

 

While most services will only be down from 6:20 am to 6:45 am, some services will be down starting at 6:00 am and lasting until 7:15 am.  TitanConnect will only be down for the 6:20 am to 6:45 am window.  Access in the residence halls will only be down from 6:20 am to 6:45 am.  TitanNet and Exchange will be down for the full window.  Should you attempt to access the system after 6:45 am and the service is back online you are welcome to continue to use the service.

 

Services at the Dental and Law campuses will remain online and available during this period of time.  Connections back to the McNichols campus will be down but general internet access and access within the buildings will remain up and available.

Voicemail is back up and running.   ATT has repaired the Data Circuit and we are back to full functionality.  Sorry for any inconvenience that this is caused.

We are sorry to report that Voicemail is still down.  ATT's first diagnosis of the problem was apparently incorrect.  ATT has been working to identify the problem and have it corrected.  They have been working with our third-party Voicemail Maintenance Company "Communitech" and also our IT group for a solution.  All involved are working diligently to get the Voicemail back online.  We appreciate your patience.  We will update this Blog as soon as Voicemail has been restored.

Power Outage - IT services down until 9 am Sunday

Due to serious electrical repair delays restored power is not expected to be back up until middle if the night. ITS staff will return onsite at 7am tomorrow to bring systems back online provided power is back up by then.

The Facilities department scheduled McNichols power outage is now in effect.  We anticipate IT systems will start coming up sometime after 3:00 pm and production level systems fully restored by 6:00 pm.  Additional non-production systems will be up on Monday by 12:00 pm.

UDM Mail is not being delivered to YAHOO.COM addresses because of recent security problems.  Starting at about Noon today, Yahoo.com stopped accepting our mail, and we are working on getting this service restored.  Undelivered messages are being queued up for later delivery, but you may wish to use another service for the time being.

As a reminder, please never give our your Titannet or Titan Connect passwords to anyone.  ITS will never ask for your passwords in an Email.

UDM Internet Connection Schedule to go down for 15 min

Our connection to the internet (with the exception of the dorms) is to go down at 10:00 pm for up to 15 minutes.  This is to complete maintenance work related power issues from several weeks ago.  The repairs are being performed by our ISP.

Blackboard Maintenance Monday, July 2 at 7:30 a.m.

Blackboard published software patches to resolve number of reported software issues. Installation of these patches requires Blackboard service to be shut down. We plan on performing this action in the standard Blackboard Maintenance time frame, Monday morning on July 2 starting at 7:30 a.m. Expected downtime is up to 2 hour.
Please close open sessions and log out of Blackboard before 7:30 a.m. to avoid possible loss of data. Check this blog for updates on this operation.

UPDATE - Regional Network Issue

The interruption in UDM internet service was caused by a power outage at our ISP co-location   located on the Wayne State Campus.  This was caused by a compromised cable located near the Wayne State Campus. The power was restored at 3:00 am this morning.

Regional Network Issue - Per ISP

Our Internet Service Provider is reporting an issue starting at 8:30 pm affecting the area.  We are awaiting word of the cause and resolution.  Please bear with us.  Resident students will be unaffected by this however access to UDM resources such as TitanConnect, Knowledge and WWW servers are down for all.

Network Interruption on Corktown and Law Campuses Today


Today,Thursday, June 14, 2012, there will be a couple unavoidable network interruptions that will impact communication between our campuses.  We regret having one of these outages occur during normal business hours but we have a very limited window of time available to address issues at our Internet Service Provider’s colocation site which hosts some of the University’s critical network equipment.  The work on this day completes the work begun on May 30, 2012.

Starting at 1:00 pm, connectivity to the Law Campus into and out of the campus will be down until 5:00 pm.  Should the work be completed prior to that time (and we are optimistic it will be), service will be restored as soon as it is available.  Connections originating from the Law School campus to the Internet, TitanConnect and other McNichols servers will be down during this time.  Network connections within the Law Campus to Law servers will remain available at all times.

Starting at 5:00 pm, connectivity to the Dental Campus into and out of the campus will be down until 9:00 pm.  Should the work be completed prior to that time (and we are optimistic it will be), service will be restored as soon as it is available.  Connections originating from the Dental School campus to the Internet, TitanConnect and other McNichols servers will be down during this time.  Network connections within the Dental Campus to Dental servers (including Axium) will remain available at all times.  Connections from UHC to Axium will be down during this time.

Email sent from the McNichols campus or outside the University to the Law and Dental campuses during these outages will be delivered and will be readable  once the campus has regained network access or if the user has accessed from a location outside of the campus.

ITS Services During the McNichols Scheduled Power Outage

To reduce the risk of potential problems resulting from the electrical work taking place early Saturday Morning on the McNichols campus, all McNichols servers will be powered down.

 

TitanConnect, Blackboard, Internet Access, all udmercy.edu web services and TitanNet will be shut-down around 2:30 AM and brought back up within 3 hours after the power has been restored.  Critical servers will be brought online first and will be available soon after the power has been restored.  It may take up to three hours for all systems to be brought back online.

 

During this outage, incoming e-mail may be queued on the sender's e-mail system or bounced back to the original sender depending on how the sender’s e-mail servers are configured to handle messages to downed sites.

 

Access to the servers at the Corktown campus will not be affected by this outage however access to McNichols based servers will not work.  Internet service from Corktown will continue to work fine for sites outside of the udmercy.edu domain.

 

Access to the servers at the Law campus will not be affected by this outage however access to McNichols based servers will not work.  Internet service from Law will continue to work fine for sites outside of the udmercy.edu domain.

 

Voice-mail for all campuses will be down during this outage as well as the 993-1000 automatic operator.

Student Union Network Outage

We've found a hardware failure in a network closet in the Student Union last night. Some workstations throughout the building, as well as wireless connectivity are affected. Public Safety security is NOT affected, but some desktop workstations are not able to connect to the network. We have our network team working together to replace the bad hardware, and networking will come back to workstations throughout the day today.

McNichols Internet Outage

Today, Friday, May 4, 2012 at 5:00 pm network connections to the McNichols campus through our primary point of connectivity will be temporarily offline while we upgrade equipment for future bandwidth expansion.

For our resident students, internet access in the residence halls will remain available during this time as it routes through our secondary point of connectivity. Upgrades to the second point of connectivity took place this past December.

For our Dental and Law professional schools, access to the internet will also remain available during this time.

Unfortunately, access to TitanConnect, Blackboard, WWW, Research and other McNichols hosted services will be limited to access from within the McNichols campus during this outage.Incoming email will either be queued by the sender’s email server or bounced back (if permitted) by the sender’s email server. Outgoing email originating on the McNichols campus will be queued for delivery when possible.

Access to off-site hosted solutions such as www.detroittitans.com, www.detroitlockerroom.com, UDM’s Emergency Alert system (https://www.getrave.com/login/udmercy), CEC’s Career Service Solution TitanCareerLink (https://udmercy-csm.symplicity.com/students/), etc. will remain available for access from outside the McNichols campus or residence hall computers.

The outage is expected to last until 9:00 pm. Should the upgrade be completed prior to that time, service will be turned on earlier.

Course Eval System Online and Ready to Accept Submissions

The faculty/course evaluation process is important in providing feedback for continuous improvement.

 

The course evaluation site is https://www.udmercy.edu/evaluate/

 

The open window for completion of faculty/course evaluations is scheduled based upon the length of the course and the school/college in which the course is offered.  Thus, if you are taking a course taught by the College of Liberal Arts and Education and a course taught in School of Business, the open window for evaluation will be different for both courses.

 

The following does not apply to the School of Dentistry or School of Law.

 

College of Liberal Arts and Education, School of Architecture and College of Health Professions/McAuley School of Nursing Courses

Faculty/Course evaluations for the standard 14 week course sections may be completed during “dead” week and Final Exam week between Sunday, April 15, 2012 through Sunday, April 29, 2012.

 

College of Engineering & Science, School of Business and ALL other programs Faculty/Course evaluations for the standard 14 week course sections may be completed during “dead” week between Sunday, April 15, 2012 through Sunday, April 22, 2012.

 

For all non-standard course sections, the open period to complete evaluations is the last two weeks of the course section with the evaluation ending the day before the exam week.  Note the day before exam week and not the day before your exam.

 

For non-standard course sections ending at the same time as a standard 14 week course sections, the open period for completion is the last two weeks ending the day before the exam week.

 

Students may access the system from any internet connected computer whether on or off campus.  For those students who prefer to use a University computer, systems are available in the ITS labs across the McNichols campus.  All evaluations are completely anonymous.

 

If you are unable to complete your online evaluation(s) due to technical reasons, please contact the Helpdesk with details ASAP.  All evals must be in the system by the published end-date.  If contacting the Helpdesk afterhours, please leave a voice-mail at 313.993.1500 or e-mail at  helpdesk@udmercy.edu or submit a ticket into the http://helpdesk.udmercy.edu system and someone will follow up with you the next business day.

Chem 114 Podium Down

The Chem 114 podium appears to have been damaged sometime Thursday or Friday of last week by someone moving the podium around and compromising the all the cables that plug directly into the floor.  We have a call into the repair company to fix it.  If you need to use this podium, please contact the AV office to let them know your needs and they will deliver to the room through the mobile service option.

THIS IS A PHISHING SCAM. Besides the fact that your reply goes to an email address outside UDM, (TECH.TEAM@mail.com), we NEVER will ask you for your username and/or password in an email message.

Banner Finance Upgrades

Today, March 13, Banner Finance upgrades will be moved into production. The entire process will probably take most of the day. If problems occur, the process might extend to the following day.

It is not necessary that you avoid accessing Banner Finance PROD during this time. However, although it is unlikely, you might experience problems if you are updating a document (creating a requisition or change order) at the same time that process is being upgraded. The worst case scenario is that you might lose the data you entered and have to re-enter the information.

Law School WIFI - Repaired

It was reported on Monday of this week that WIFI at the Law School was problematic.  After several days on-site, ITS fine tuned the network by retuning various access points.  Early reports from faculty and students indicate performance has improved.  Thank you for bringing this to our attention and your patience while changes were implemented.

Blackboard application upgrade is scheduled for Monday, February 20, starting at 7:30 a.m.; estimated service downtime is 2 hours. Scheduled Internet Outage - 2:00 am 2/7/12

We have been notified by our Internet service provider that there will be a short interruption in service between 2:00 am and 6:00 am tonight.  Please be advised all internet services on all campuses will be down EXCEPT access from the McNichols residence halls.

 

Generally, 2:00 am to 6:00 am is a very light time on the University network.

 

External access to TC, Blackboard and all University webservers will be affected.  Users on-campus during these hours will be able to access internal (udmercy.edu) servers but nothing externally.

 

Mail sent during this time will be queued on the sender’s side however this varies from site-to-site.  Should you discover you are missing an incoming message expected during that time period, you will want to ask the sender to resend it again.

The TitanConnect INB and TitanConnect Self Service STUDENT and FACULTY systems were upgraded yesterday and that is now complete. Today we are upgrading the TitanConnect General system, which could again cause some errors. If you encounter any, please wait a few minutes and try the function again.

TitanConnect Upgrades

The TitanConnect INB and TitanConnect Self Service STUDENT and FACULTY systems are being upgraded today. There may be periods when a function or screen gives an error message while you are using it. That is because that function is being upgraded while you are using it. Please wait a few minutes and try yuour function/screen again. Once the update is complete, the error will resolve itself.

Since the TitanConnect system is available 24/7/365, there is never a good time to do upgrades, but we hope the timing is not too inconvenient for mostusers of the system.

This upgrade will NOT affect the TitanConnect Portal, E-mail or Blackboard.

Wireless Network Setback

Recent electrical problems have apparently burned out 3 network wireless access points in the Engineering and Ford Life Science buildings. Wireless (WiFi)coverage may be sparse in the Northeast corner of Engineering, and in Ford Life Science 3rd floor East, and in the lab in room 010. ITS is working to replace the burned out equipment as we can.

VOICEMAIL RESTORED

Voicemail seems to have been restored and should be working for all areas of the University. If anyone experiences any problems from this time forward - Please place a Helpdesk Ticket and document the problem with all applicable info(Phone # + Time of occurence). Thank you for your patience.

We are experiencing an issue where the voice-mail system occassionally is not picking up at the expected interval.  ITS-Telecom is investigating the situation with the voice-mail maintenance provider.

Internet/DHCP Across University and Dorms Down

This morning our DHCP server failed and required a restart. The DHCP server issues out IP address to all computers. We anticipate this will be back in service within the next 30 minutes.

The easiest way to get back online will be a reboot of your computer. Once things are fully up, we will comment to this post with the update.

DNS and Internet Issues in Res Halls

We are working through an issue with our DNS server on the dorms. It might look like the Internet is down.

TitanConnect email services(web client/imap/pop3) will be unavailable for intermittent periods of time between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday January 5th for maintenance. Users are strongly advised to close all sessions and log out to avoid possible loss of some or all of the work. This maintenance will not affect Exchange email users.
