Incoming Internet E-Mail Update

The problems that have been experienced over the past several days appear to be resolved.  We will continue to monitor the situation closely.  Technically, a flood of incoming e-mail overwhelmed our system which led us to throttle acceptance of messages.  Throttling remains on.  Sites that pummel e-mail at us all day long may notice this adjustment.

There was a large job running this morning that was consuming 90% of the CPU. This may be related to the fact that the mainframe is still having residual hardware issues. APECS and Weblink are back up 6:35 PM

The Unisys mainframe has some hardware issues that will need to be addressed on Monday of next week. These issues prevent us from being able to print reports. The Apecs and Weblink system have been brought back up and will be available throughout the weekend. On Monday we expect the Unisys rep to be on site and it may be neccessary to bring the machine down at that time. Every effort will be made to avoid this if possible. The wireless internet is not working. There is currently a problem with the DNS server on the wireless network.

Quicktime Streaming Server Services Restored

4:15 PM Quicktime Streaming Server services have been restored.

Weblink up 7:20 AM

Weblink came up five minutes later than the usual time of 7:15 due to two high priority month end jobs still running which had slowed the backup job. The jobs were reset to a normal priority, the backup was canceled due to the need to have weblink up, and Apecs/Weblink were brought online. ITS Dept.

Quicktime Streaming Server

The streaming server was unavailable overnight due to a hardware fault. Services have been restored and the vendor has been contacted for repair.

Mail Delivery Services Restored

It appears e-mail has been queuing from 1:00 am to 6:55 am this morning.  Mail is now being delivered.

TitanNet/Exchange/Active Directory Down

A problem arose around 5:00 pm today that has led to having to restore the Active Directory from tape. The problem is causing all Exchange users incoming e-mail to be rejected or queued on the sender's servers. Login to TitanNet and Exchange and Outlook Web Access is not functional at this time. At 9:00 am tomorrow, the support vendor will work with the ITS-Networking staff to resolve the matter and restore services. We apologize for this late update and inconvenience to the user community.

Speeds should be close to normal.

Several of the fixes ran longer than anticipated. Speeds should appear close to normal.

Several Exchange users should be getting their previous e-mail repopulated back into their account over the next day or two.

Slowness Update

The SAN continues through an unexpected second phase as part of the recovery process. Speeds are somewhat improved but still lacking from normal levels.

E-mail is processing but at a slow rate. There are approx 3000 messages in queue that will continue to be delivered.

A portion of the Exchange users have been brought back online. ITS will be contacting those that are affected by this.

Update on Server Situations/E-Mail

Problem 1 - The source of the issue was identified as a hard drive failure with the SAN that services the e-mail, Exchange and TitanNet servers. The automatic rebuild using the hot spare is now 70% done; we anticipate it to be completed and speeds restored during the morning of 9/21.

Problem 2 - The slowness of the SAN lead to corruption in the Active Directory authentication module. This kept users from authenticating as well as kept the home and group drives in an unstable situation. The Active Directory authentication module was completely repaired this morning.

Problem 3 - The slowness of the SAN lead to corruption in the Microsoft Exchange mailboxes. Three of four mailstores are back online and stable. The fourth we hope to have up and running by midnight tonight. The last group of people affected is primary the C&F faculty.

We regret the huge inconvenience at this time and are continuing to work to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact the ITS Helpdesk.

Yahoo Issue Resolved

After much work to bring this issue to a close, ITS-Networking has implemented a solution that we believe will result in the delivery of e-mail from the and accounts to accounts.

In working to resolve this issue, it has been discovered that Yahoo has changed their policy for receiving messages and only accepts a certain number of messages at a time per sending domain.

Messages sent to Yahoo sit in a queue until delivered or time-out after a 2-4 hour period of failed delivery time.

To ensure and messages are delivered to Yahoo, all messages are placed in a "persistent queue" that is not scheduled to time-out after several hours of attempts to deliver the message.

For Yahoo recipients incoming messages may be delayed.

All Yahoo recipients should be encouraged to add your or e-mail account to their address book. Taking this step, will ensure an message or message arrives in the inbox and not in the built-in Yahoo SPAM box.

If a Yahoo recipient reports to you that they have yet to receive your message, please ask them to check their SPAM folder for it and click the "this is not spam" button. Also, ask them to add your address to their address book.

Internet E-Mail

Internet e-mail was held in queues between 3pm and 4pm...all queued messages were delivered by 4:05pm.

Weblink and Apecs are Available

Weblink came up yesterday afternoon and is running on a temporary server. The permanent server is being worked on today. You will continue to be able to use Weblink during this time. Apecs was delayed this morning as the backup job was waiting for a tape and held up the start of casts. SHamilton
