Blacklisted by Hotmail (again)

E-mail to hotmail accounts may be rejected until we clear our good name with the service (once again).  Yet again, a user has had their account used to send thousands of messages to external entities which has resulted in blacklisting. We will try to clear this up as soon as possible.

 

In the mean-time, use your UDM account to e-mail other UDM accounts instead of e-mailing to/or from a hotmail account.  Sending to accounts within the University domain are gaurenteed delivery.

Blackboard Maintenance scheduled for Tuesday 12/22 at 7:30 a.m. - Update

Maintenance outage scheduled for Tuesday 12/22 at 7:30 a.m. will be combined with upgrade of current software. This will cause Blackboard system to be out of service for longer than initially planned. Expected downtime is up to 1 hour. Users are advised to stop using Blackboard service and log out latest at 7:30 a.m. to prevent possible loss of work.
This upgrade suppose to fix number of issues reported and provide new functionality to Blackboard service.

Reminder - Potential interruption of service between 7:00 am and 11:00 am

Between 7:00 am and 11:00 am, the University’s internet provider will be performing some maintenance on the Wayne State campus that may potentially disrupt service for UDM and a larger number of other schools.  The interruption should be brief.  If you have difficulty getting in, please try later in the day.

 

If you are on campus, you should not be affected by this situation.  Faculty grade submissions are required by Monday, December 21, 2009 at 12:00 pm.  Please keep this in mind.

Exchange email issue

The server was non-operational for several minutes today; between 2:00PM and 2:15PM. This issue was related in how we store email logs and has been modified to prevent this issue in the future.

There should have been no loss of emails, as the SMTP Service stores these messages for a period of 4 hours and delivered them once the log issue was resolved.

Blackboard service maintenance restart scheduled for Tuesday, 12/22/09 7:30 a.m.

Blackboard service needs to be restarted to apply minor software changes. This will cause two minutes outage in service Tuesday, 12/22/09 at 7:30 a.m. To avoid possible loss of work, all users are advised to log out Blackboard system at that time.

Email Issue - Should Be Resolved

We just learned at 10:30 pm of issues related to incoming e-mail and the network and webservices area were quick to respond to address the issue.  Mail appears to be flowing through at this time.  The mail system for external incoming e-mail appears to have stopped around 11:55 am today.

Autodesk - 3dsMax Studio License Issue!

We are currently having an issue with one of the three Autodesk applications. This is the 3dsMax Studio and it is currently unable to pull a license from the LMGRD server.

We have found the solution and are in the process of deploying it to the labs. So far, the Engineering Lab is the only place in which all three applications work properly. All labs should be fixed, sometime next week.

Please keep in mind that Revit and AutoCad work in all labs.

Verizon blacklisting UDM

Besides the Microsoft blacklisting, Verizon.net appears to be blacklisting UDM as well.  ITS networking staff will work to clear this up with these providers as quickly as we can.   Blacklisting is generally a result of too much SPAM coming out of someone’s account.  Please, say “Delete” to SPAM.

 

MSN Hotmail rejects UDM e-mails 12/02 7:30 a.m.

MSN Hotmail does not accept e-mails sent from UDM mail servers, for policy reasons. Probable cause is that Hotmail have identified our e-mail servers as source of spam messages. ITS is analyzing problem and urging Hotmail to lift this ban.

Converging @students.udmercy.edu into the TC Portal Announcement

 

As previously announced, UDM’s legacy Communigate e-mail solution (students.udmercy.edu) will soon be retired and in its place will be the integrated TitanConnect portal e-mail solution (tc.udmercy.edu).

 

The TitanConnect portal e-mail solution provides students with an @udmercy.edu.  An @udmercy.edu account may be a more attractive address to use particularly once you have graduated and choose to continue to use your University e-mail account.

 

Students with legacy e-mail accounts who would like to centralize their e-mail on the TitanConnect portal may “marry” their @students.udmercy.edu account to their new e-mail account.  All new mail sent to a students @student.udmercy.edu account will be directed to land into the students TitanConnect portal e-mail account.

 

This is a one-time process.

 

The legacy e-mail address will remain in existence to ensure mail sent to the old address is redirected to the TitanConnect portal e-mail inbox.

 

Existing e-mail stored in legacy students@udmercy.edu account may be transferred into the TitanConnect portal e-mail account using Communigates “redirect” feature.

 

After marrying an account together, it is strongly recommended to establish a Communigate redirect rule just in case new messages mistakenly land in the legacy e-mail inbox.

 

To perform the linking/marrying process you must know in advance:

1.       Your TitanConnect user code and password

2.       Your Communigate user code and password

 

If you do not know your TitanConnect password, go to http://tc.udmercy.edu and click on the “forgot password” feature.  Answer your own security questions to reset your password.

 

If you do not know your legacy Communigate password you will need to stop by the ITS Helpdesk in the Fisher building, Room 230, during Helpdesk hours of Mon-Thurs 8:30 am to 7:00 pm or Fri 8:30 am to 5:00 pm and present your UDM student ID to have this password reset.  The Helpdesk is closed on University holidays.

YouTube Performance Feedback

A week or two ago, ITS implemented some improved bandwidth adjustments that were believed to address the sluggishness and buffering with YouTube.  We would appreciate hearing any feedback you may have regarding the performance of YouTube on campus via wired computer or wireless.  If you can share the location and approximate time where you have had success or problems that would be Helpful to ITS.  (i.e. WIFI in the Quads at 3amish, Office in Briggs at 10:00 am,  WIFI in Student Union around 2pm ish)

Due to construction there will be outages in Calihan for both the phone and data networks. The west side of the 1st floor will experience both data and voice outages throughout the day. These are the same outages that were planned for 11/11/2009, however, due to complications with the closet move they were unable to be completed until today. Weblink is Working Well Under New Secured Environment

ITS is taking measures to prevent further virus infection of the Weblink server. This will require an update of Weblink - will be back online in just a few minutes.

Exchange Mail Problem

We have had reports since Thursday afternoon that Exchange mail is not delivering in a timely way, and Outlook Web Access (remote Email) is not working, or is working VERY slowly. We are rebooting the Exchange server this morning, and we will address any other issues as we find them. Please report Exchange mail problems to the helpdesk at 3-1500.

Network Repairs - Briggs 2nd Floor - 11/6/09

This Friday, November 6, 2009, there will be a short network outage at 8:30 am and at 12:00 pm for the entire Briggs building while ITS cuts over network traffic for expansion work to accommodate the renovations taking place on the 2nd floor of Briggs.

 

Between 8:30 am and 12:00 pm, the 2nd floor of Briggs offices will be without access while the 2nd floor network closet is enhanced to accommodate the work taking place in Briggs 210/211.

 

Briggs labs 245 and 247 will continue to have access during this time.

 

WIFI will be available throughout the 2nd floor during this time as well.

TITANNET NOT STABLE

We are experiencing some issues with our Titannet domain this morning. We are tracking down a hardware failure, and in the mean time you may see some error messages about TITANNET not being available. You may not be able to log into Titannet, and you may lose access to G: H: and other network drives. If you cannot login to the Titannet domain, try using the UDM username and change the THIRD LINE to your local machine. The Helpdesk (3-1500) can help you with that UDM account's password.

Problem with log-in to the network using TitanNet system is solved. If you started using your computer before 8:20 a.m. and don't have all the resources you usually have (G drive etc.), please log out and log back in to attach these resources.

UDM Email Blacklisted by Comcast and others

UDM appears to be blacklisted by a number of servers including Comcast.  If you experience a bounce-back from an address you have successfully sent to and believe to still be active in the past and the bounce-back indicates some type of security issue, it may be related to our blacklisted status.

 

ITS will work the channels to clear our good name and restore e-mail communications to these sites as quickly as possible.

Bandwidth Adjustments

Significant changes have been implemented to provide more bandwidth to the resident students.  Any feedback on performance would be most appreciated.  Of course, access to P2P type sites may still be slow.  YouTube seems to be slow at times as well.

The listserver is processing mail once again. Due to a corrupted list, most inbound messages to the lists were never processed. Unfortunately, if a message was sent to a list and was not processed through, the message will need to be resent.

TitanConnect Portal/Email Maintenance Scheduled for 9/12/09 @6:00 pm

Please be advised the TitanConnect Portal/Email system and related services (including TitanConnect INB and TitanConnect SSB) will be temporarily down on Saturday, September 9, 2009 starting at 6:00 pm for approximately 8-12 hours.  During this time the system will be upgraded to the latest version of the Luminis portal software.

 

Early Sunday morning we expect all systems will be operational and available for service.

 

During this time, incoming e-mail will be queued and delivered when possible.  During this time, the Knowledge/Blackboard server will remain online and available for use.

 

Students using the @students.udmercy.edu e-mail account will continue to function as normal throughout this update.

Law Campus - Dialing 248, 586, 734 Issue

Please be advised the Law Campus is currently experiencing difficulty dialing the metro-Detroit region (248, 586,734) and ATT is working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

 

Local calls from the Law Campus to 313 and long distance calls to other area codes appear to be working at this time.

 

To the best of our knowledge, phone service is fully operational on the McNichols and Corktown campuses (with the noted exception as reported by your Helpdesk tickets).  Access to the ITS-AV/CS line is also still down.

Reminder - Planned Internet Service Down-Time due to Facilities Electrical Work

Per the message from earlier in the week regarding the 6/13 at 8:00 am power shutdown.

Please be aware the power outage to Shiple Residence Hall this Saturday will impact a number of IT related services.


If you are off-campus, you will be unable to access all University websites such as www.udmercy.edu, knowledge.udmercy.edu, it.udmercy.edu, tc.udmercy.edu, helpdesk.udmercy.edu, facilityrequest.udmercy.edu, collegewebsites.udmercy.edu, courseevaluations.udmercy.edu, Weblink, catalog, schedule, etc.). No e-mail will be sent nor received. Incoming messages may be queued by the sender’s mail server or may result in a non-deliverable message to the originator.

If you are on the McNichols campus you will be able to access University web sites however you will not be able to access the Internet. You will be able to send e-mail but it will be queued and delivered after power has been restored to Shiple. Mail sent on the McNichols campus from a udmercy.edu account to a udmercy.edu account will work fine.

If you are on the Law or Dental campuses, you will not be able to access University websites or the Internet during this time.

Access to hosted solutions such as www.detroittitans.com and http://udm-its.blogspot.com will remain available throughout this outage.

Traffic Issues

UDM is currently experiencing a internet traffic issue with s small set of sites. Currently Oakwood hospital is unable to connect to UDM resources. Other may be affected at this time but ITS is unaware of any others. ITS staff is currently working with our ISP to resolve this issue. Updates will be forth coming.

Sakai Server Maintenance Complete

Maintenance on the Sakai server has been completed. Please be advised of the following change:

Sakai login credentials are now the same as your TitanConnect(http://tc.udmercy.edu) account. To login to Sakai provide the same username and password that you use to login to the TitanConnect portal.

Also upgraded during the maintenance window was the server ssl certificate. You will no longer receive the "Certificate Expired" warning.

The Cascade hardware and software upgrades have been completed. You may login to Cascade using the new http://cascade.udmercy.edu url. The port 8080 addition to the url is no longer necessary. When logging in, be advised that Cascade is now using the same credentials as your TitanConnect portal. Your password will be the same as you use to login to the portal.

BlackBerry synchronization issues

We have discovered a problem with our BlackBerry server not synchronizing some Exchange Mail. We are working on the server now and expect a resolution by 10:00AM. We will update the blog at around that time to reflect what we find.

Corktown/UHC all Internet service restored

Good news. The antenna's between the Corktown and Maccabbees locations have been upgraded to new units. The older ones were damaged by an act of God over Wednesday morning at 9:00 am.

All repair parts have been received and our vendor is up on the roof replacing the components. We anticipate a return to service in the next couple of hours.

Terminal Server Rebuild *** UPDATE

The Terminal Server rebuild is almost complete. We have just a few things to install and to clean up. EMAS is the current priority.

If you use Exchange Email, then setting up Microsoft Outlook is simple. Start up Outlook and follow the prompts. It should step you through and autodetect your account, etc. It MAY require some other settings to be entered, so if you have any problems with Exchange Email, call the Helpdesk or Alex @ 3-1463.

Terminal Server Rebuild *** UPDATE

The Terminal Server rebuild is proceeding well. We will continue to work on this through much of Wednesday the 8th. We will be installing additional applications, fixing issues as we find them, and generally trying to make it work better for you.

There is a Windows 2003 Terminal Server License message flashing at the bottom of the screen. This is temporary, and we will stop those shortly. It is possible that we will need to reboot the server several times Wednesday, so we may interrupt your session to ask you to exit. Please note that we will try to keep these reboots to a minimum.

If you find any issues when using this server, please call the helpdesk at 3-1500 and report them. You may need assistance configuring some applications to get them to work as you had them working before.

Terminal Server Rebuild

The UDM Terminal Server is being rebuilt today (Tues. 4/7), and it will be unavailable for most of the day. We expect limited service near 4:30PM, and all applications should be available my mid-day tomorrow (Wed. 4/8)

This much-anticipated upgrade will include giving our remote users access to more applications that you've been asking for. You'll have more space for saving files temporarily. We'll be upgrading the MS Office to the 2007 version to match most of the rest of the university community. And the rebuild should fix some bugs and performance issues that have been reported.

Blacklisted

We appear to be blacklisted by major e-mail sites including AT&T, SBCGlobal, etc. Poor judgment within our community led to people being deceived and giving out their passwords only to be exploited and to result in too much SPAM going through their accounts to various servers. Those servers have now blocked us down. We’re working to clear our good name.

Messages sent to site blacklisting UDM will result in a returned message stating in one form or another that the message could not be delivered.

Please don’t ever give up your user code and password to anyone!!!

We’re hoping users are finding the new TitanConnect system a refreshing experience compared to registrations for Fall of the past.  No need to look back to last year or the year before or the year before that or the year before that one either.  Two days without serious hiccups on the system is a very good start.  Students with login issues should get in touch with the Helpdesk for assistance.  No need to wait, try logging into the portal now and seeing if you are ready to register.  If your time has arrived for registration, go for it.

TitanConnect - Maintenance at 8:00 pm, March 11, 2009

At 8:00 pm on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, ITS will be taking down the TitanConnect portal for one hour to complete maintenance work in preparation for registration.  Attempts to access the system during that time will display a warning screen regarding this event.  Once the warning screen goes away and the login screen appears, you may log in and begin to use the system.

 

Access to Blackboard, Wimba and TurnItIn will remain available during this time.

TitanConnect Parallel Deployment Successfully Completed

After a marathon session starting Friday morning at 7:30 am and a public start at 6:00 pm through to Saturday at 11:30 am, the Web Services team and Senior Network Manager are pleased to report UDM has its first fully functional parallel deployment environment in place for production use.

This environment was put in place in anticipation of all UDM students coming into the TitanConnect environment for registration starting March 16 and eventually all student e-mail moving onto this platform as well.

Please feel free to log in and use the system to it full capability. If you notice any issues, please report them to through a helpdesk ticket at http://helpdesk.udmercy.edu. Please don't assume others will report, we'd like to hear from all.

There are two known issues that we encountered during our test run of the parallel deployment that require additional work. You need not report on these known issues.

Issue #1, some tabs on the portal page may be misnamed or carry the same name as another personal tab. Please proceed with renaming your tab back to what it originally was.

Issue #2, something we have seen in the past and resolved and something we hope to address as quickly as possible. E-mail users (thus only faculty and staff) may find that once they log off the portal that there e-mail session remains open. The X button the email screen does not properly function but if you go to the calendar tab in the e-mail and click on logout, this will properly log you out of that environment. Ultimately, once you logout of the portal you should also be cleared out of your e-mail account.

Kudos to the Luminis team who have implemented the new solution.

TitanNet down for hard drive repair and preventative maintenance

TitanNet users please note your home and groups directories will be unavailable between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm today while a bad-drive is swapped out and preventative maintenance procedures are completed.

All TitanNet users should be logged off prior to 6:00 pm.

TitanConnect Upgrade to Parallel Domain - Down Fri 6:00 pm

Just a quick reminder that UDM’s TitanConnect environment which includes Faculty/Staff e-mail, the portal, Banner INB and Banner SSB will be unavailable starting at 6:00 pm tonight. As per the message sent on Wednesday evening, a new parallel domain environment with load balancing, fault tolerance and expansion capability will be installed in anticipation of our UDM students using the TitanConnect system for registration starting March 16.

Please be certain to log-off your e-mail, portal, INB and SSB accounts prior to 6:00 pm.

We anticipate access available on Saturday at 12:00 pm.

Voice-Mail Restored

Voice-mail service has been restored.  An update that took place yesterday at 8:00 am created a few unexpected problems.  The problems have been resolved.

McNichols Home and Group drive UPDATE

The McNichols domain controller/server is back up and functional. You MAY need to logoff and log back in order to gain access to your network drives.

We are expecting some replacement parts tomorrow (Tuesday), and we may need to schedule emergency repairs during regular business hours if the situation calls for it. We will notify everyone if we will be brining down the server for such repairs.

McNichols Home and Group drives down

We have experienced a hardware failure in one of our domain controller servers on Titannet. You may see "disconnect" messages repeating while it is down.

Your H: (home) and G: (group) drives, as well as some other drives may be missing until we repair the server. We do not know at this time if this machine may be fixed without having to replace hardware, or if we will have to call emergency service to replace parts.

We will keep this blog updated as we find answers.

ATT E-mail Blacklisted

Recently, we had a couple people from the UDM community fall for a phishing scam and gave their e-mail password to a scammer. The scammer took that information and spammed thousands of people. Because of this situation, UDM e-mail to ATT was blacklisted. The offending accounts have been locked down and we are working to clear our good name to restore e-mail communication with that site.

Please, please, please...don't ever give up your password to anyone.

TitanConnect Portal Services Restored

Maintenance on the TitanConnect Luminis portal has been completed. All services have been restored.

As we move closer to the start of production use of the TitanConnect Banner system there will be a number of occasions when ITS will need to interrupt usage so that we are fully prepared for the Student system, Financial Aid system and student portal environment are ready for use.

 

Tonight, from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm we will be taking down the TitanConnect Luminis portal environment.  All other University IT services will remain available.

 

Please make certain you have logged off prior to 8:00 pm.

BANNER/TC down

The scheduled down time for Banner has been exceeded due to problems establishing connection with Oracle. ITS is working on this. Thank you.

Eng Labs, Briggs Labs and D&F DB

The firewalls for Eng and Briggs will be down until mid-morning Tuesday. Internet access from the Eng and Briggs labs will not work but all other functions should.

The C&F DB server will be unavailable until it is brought back up in the morning.

Data Center Upgrades Scheduled for this Monday's MLK University Holiday

On Monday, January 19, 2009 (Martin Luther King Holiday) the ITS department will be upgrading the central storage solution used by the majority of production servers throughout the University.  This upgrade will provide more disk space (16 more Terabytes) for all major servers in preparation for the TitanConnect Banner Student, Financial Aid and Portal go-live projects, allow for ITS to streamline daily and weekly back-up and free hardware that will become core components for a future hot-site.

To accomplish this upgrade a number of computer services will be offline for a period of time.  Starting at 6:00 am on January 19th access to all University web-servers, all TitanConnect Banner services, all TitanNet services, faculty/staff email and student email will be unavailable to approximately 3:00 pm.

All incoming e-mail will be queued and delivered after services have been restored.

During this time, access to the Internet for web surfing, Exchange, Blackboard (aka Knowledge), www.detroittitans.com, Wimba and TurnItIn will remain available.

Updates will be posted on the ITS Outage Blog located at http://udm-its.blogspot.com.

We apologize in advance for the down-time and appreciate your patience as we take these steps to further build up the University’s environment.

Chemistry and Engineering WiFI

As of noon today, Friday January 2nd, the Wifi in Chemistry and Engineering has been restored. Offices in Chemistry were not affected by the outage.

As a result of the power outages during break, all of Chemistry appears to be down (MDF), six access points in Engineering and one access point in the Library.  ITS will work to restore all of these services as quickly as possible.

The Information Technology Services department wishes all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

From 12/23/08 at 5:00 PM to 1/2/09 at 7:30 AM all of our systems will be on auto-pilot. While you are enjoying the break, the ITS staff will also take some “downtime”.

During this period all websites, Blackboard server, e-mail servers and our cable stations will run as normal. In the event there is a technical problem, you may report it to ITS by posting a comment on the ITS blog at http://udm-its.blogspot.com. When you post a comment on the blog, an ITS staff member is immediately notified by pager. We will try to reach the appropriate staff person to attempt to resolve the problem and we will use the ITS blog as the place for two-way communication. By using the blog, everyone has the opportunity to see two-way communications on reported issues and the current status.

Tickets submitted into the Helpdesk system will be periodically looked at, as well as messages on the Helpdesk phone line listened to, and answered when possible or upon return to campus.
