Blackboard Outage *Resolved*

We are aware of the concern with Blackboard and we are working with BB support to resolve as soon as possible.  We will update this blog accordingly.

any updates??

Why does Detroit Mercy continue to use Blackboard despite its constant outages and compatibility issues?

Unfortunately, the problem is IT not knowing how to get 2 systems to communicate with each other. It's not Blackboard's fault.

Which 2 systems? Have you heard something? Please share.

This is ridiculous. Blackboard has been down for 17 hours and 31 minutes. I have an exam tomorrow on 25 lectures that I cannot get to. Why is it taking so long? How can someone consistently be so bad at their job and still be employed. I see 80 grand gets me no where.

Could you post an update?

Regrettably, after a full day of back and forth with support, no resolution yet but Blackboard is escalating this outage to the next tier up.

We continue to have serious issues with Blackboard support for the local install but are continuing to work this through into the evening to bring this back online as quickly as we can.

Is there an anticipated time for Blackboard being brought back up?

We're still waiting for Blackboard to provide that level of detail. Their teams are still reviewing logs, requesting test commands to be run, trying different things. As soon as we have a sense of a time-frame, we will post it to the blog.

There are a lot of things due this week and a lot of studying and grading to be done between now and the end of term and we want to see this back up and running as quickly as possible for all users.

This is honestly unacceptable. Students are trying to go ahead before the holiday so they can spend time with their families. An outage once or twice would be understandable, but students need to be compensated for these inconveniences. We pay good money for quality education. Students have lost exams worth 20% of their grades because of this unreliable system. We need more than an I am sorry for the inconvenience because this is effecting our GPAs by limiting our access to study material.

It's easy to be outraged, as long as professors will support the delay, this is all ok.

I have faith ITS is doing everything it can to bring this back up asap. Good luck.

The only thing I would suggest is an email from the university about the outage, so everyone knows. I haven't seen any sort of formal communication on this.

UPDATE
THIS IS ABSURD I NEED TO ACCESS MY STUDY MATERIAL

I understand that ITS is doing everything within their power to bring this back up, however none of my professors are supportive of these outages. Deadlines have not been extended. Exams are the same day regardless to the lack of study materials. All is not okay. I am sorry, but the University needs to come up with a way to compensate students. We can't make up for this lost time. It is not as simple as doing an assignment tomorrow, many of us work full-time or part-time jobs that don't allow flexibility with these unexpected delays.

If your faculty are not working with you, please talk with your advisor or your faculty dean's office.

We still don't have an ETA but we are seeing some progress from Blackboard support in getting past a number of system errors.

The work with Blackboard Support continues.

It's extremely disrespectful that no emails have been sent out to the student body with apologies or updates with all of these random, poorly-timed downtimes. Our grades are dependent on blackboard access. This is ridiculous and unprofessional. We shouldn't have to come to you for updates.

I went to a school before this that had nearly 30,000 students and used blackboard, and NEVER had these kind of issues. In fact their blackboard is up and running right now. Please stop blaming blackboard.

It appears Blackboard is back up and running. Thank you for all of your hard work!

UDM-ITS said...

Blackboard is up and running again. The source of the problem was related to an Oracle database backup and archiving process that runs behind the scenes.

Thank you for your patience during this difficult outage.

If you encounter further issues, please let us know.

For our records, the duration of this outage was 41 hours and 20 minutes.
