Title: Restored users from Azure Active Directory (AAD) can't access SharePoint Online

User Impact: Users may have been unable to access SharePoint Online.

More info: Restored users from AAD may have seen an error indicating "User not in directory".

Impact was specific to restored users who were soft deleted in AAD from Monday, May 18, 2020, to Thursday, May 28, 2020.

Final status: We received reports that restored users who were soft deleted in AAD from Monday, May 18, 2020, to Thursday, May 28, 2020, were unable to access the service. We investigated the issue and identified that a recent update introduced a code regression that was causing the issue. We developed and deployed a fix to resolve the problem and confirmed that the issue was resolved.

Scope of impact: This issue may have impacted restored users that were soft deleted from AAD from Monday, May 18, 2020, to Thursday, May 28, 2020.

End time: Sunday, June 7, 2020, at 11:30 PM UTC

Root cause: A recent update introduced a code regression that prevented restored users from accessing SharePoint Online.

Next steps:

- We're reviewing the offending update to better understand why it resulted in impact, and to determine why impact wasn't caught prior to deployment.
